There have been cattle exhibits are the Smallholders’ and Garden Festival since 2004. Now there is a full blown competition for the best stand. HCCW has won it three times, in spite of an historical bias towards the Welsh Blacks. This year we won again! Well done Becky for the ideas, Annie for the words, Mo... for the layout and printing and our lovely Chair Liz for her hard work on the stand! |

The Club will have a stand at the Smallholder and Garden Festival and the committee are looking forward to seeing you as it's very popular. Please drop by and say hello if you're passing! The stand will again be in the competition for the best presented/designed display and we are hoping to do even better than last year's third place.
The cattle are always a huge crowd puller and usually more people visit us than any other exhibit: they love the photos and live beasts are even more fascinating.
We would like some help to man the stand, so if you would like to contribute and have an hour to spare on your visit to talk about your fold and/or Highland experiences to an interested audience, please let us know via the contact us page on this site. |

When she came south in March for the HCCW event, Liz Shaw brought a calf colostrum booster supplement. Made by Osmonds, it comes in a bottle to which warm water is added, the bottle is shaken and the liquid fed to the calf within 4 or 5 hours of birth. This supplement can only be ordered by the dozen, but if we can get a few people interested it may be worth ordering a case to divide amonst members. It does cost £9 per bottle, but it is very effective if a calf is not suckling well in the first few hours of life. If you are interested, please let me know, by email, phone or proper post via the contact page. |

The advent of the badger cull and tighter TB testing regulations means that people whose beasts haven't been handled much and who do not have a crush are looking around for methods of restraining cattle whilst they are tested. There are several types of crush around. The "full body" is expensive to buy and not very portable without a tractor and trailer. The head crush is smaller and less expensive but does not contain the actively resistant kicker unless reinforced with gates, hurdles etc.
